In this light, artworks and storytelling will combine to bring a warm sense of home, growth, and renewal for a visual storytelling experience for the community.

Fall Reflections is a 2-month collaboration with the Tusc. Co. Art Guild. The idea is simple: We write stories and poetry based on artwork from the Art Guild. Artists will submit their paintings to the Writers Guild for consideration, then writers will select a painting that "calls to them and their creativity." The blending of art and storytelling will then come together at two different events, one in September at the Dover Public Library and the other in October at the Tusc. Co. (Phila) Library.

The timeline for participation in this collaboration is as follows:

Writers will view/select a painting at our JUNE meeting

Drafts of stories/poems will be workshopped at our JULY meeting

Submission deadline of finalized work will be our AUGUST meeting

Submission guidelines:

Please submit final work in single-spaced formatting specific to your genre
Creative formatting is encouraged for poetry
          Double-sided - not single
Typed in Times New Roman 12pt font
Title and author name at the top

NOTE: Works submitted will be part of both shows, on display for visitors to read, from September through October. Copies will become the property of the Writers Guild for our archives and scrapbook (creating memories of what we do in the community), but authors retain 100% ownership and copyright at all times and will receive recognition for their authorship.

                                                                         MARK YOUR CALENDARS
for this wonderful blending of art and literary work

SEPTEMBER 16, 2026 - Dover Public Library - 5-7pm (Community Room)
All month long, the paintings will be displayed in the Community Room and the written work will be hanging beside the artwork, safely attached to the wall in laminated sheets. On 9/16, the Guild will present the written work with the authors reading their pieces aloud for the community. People in attendance will be able to hear the oral story/poem while gazing upon the artwork, bringing the arts to life through wonderful blending of the visual and auditory. After the readings, the artists and writers will have an opportunity to talk about their works and creative inspirations, as well as a chance to meet and mingle with the audience. Light snacks will be provided.

OCTOBER 7, 2026 - Tusc. Co. (Phila) Library - 5:30-7:30pm
All month long, five to six paintings will be displayed in the Community Room, with another four to five displayed in the hallway; the written works will be hanging beside the artwork, safely attached to the wall in laminated sheets. On 10/7, the Guild will present the written works for the paintings in the community Room, with the authors reading the pieces aloud for the community. We know them just as much as we know ourselves - or our best friend. We know their likes, dislikes, ticks/tells, personality, family structure, favorite foods, beliefs, and so much. All so we can create characters that jump off the page.

To get our minds working, we each started developing a new character and thus began a character study. We used character-building questions (Character Development, "Character Questionnaire," under Resources). These questions dove deep into the psyche of the character and even asked "What's in the character's fridge right now?"

Talk about freedom! When we know our characters - our babies - down to the finer details, we are free to have them act, speak, and re-act with ease, confidence, and authenticity. It's a great feeling.

To organize our thoughts, we used the Character Stat Sheet (under Resources) to begin building a character sketch, which is simply an organizer for all of our character's finer details. This is a wonderful diary-like collection of fun facts about our characters. From family structure to personality traits and even miscellaneous information like email address and phone number, we can organize our thoughts and create a "file" of all things characterization.

With this, we're all set to find a story for them to star in!

Looking forward to our next meeting, we're all busy finishing up our character sketches so we can build a strong character for March's writing prompt:

"When I awoke, I was in the hospital..."

Using our Character Sketch, we can have fun writing our next adventure. Why was the character in the hospital? Who's with them? How are they feeling? How will they react? What will they even say? We can let our creativity run wild as we place our new darlings into their new worlds, and, by doing so, can let our individual styles and genres shine bright!

NOTE:
Be sure to bring your Character Sketch to the next meeting so you can talk about your character study and how you brought your character to life.

Character Stat Sheet.
